In certain installations, a logger may be unable to communicate with a BaseStation and therefore cannot receive software updates through the normal cloud update process.
This occurs when a legacy Hardware Version 1 (HW1) logger operating on Software Version 5.2 is installed in a system using a Hardware Version 2 (HW2) BaseStation operating on Software Version 8.0.
Because communication cannot be established between these devices, the logger cannot receive the software update required to bring it to a compatible version.
Symptoms
You may be experiencing this issue if:
- A logger appears offline despite being within communication range of the BaseStation.
- The logger does not receive available firmware or software updates.
- Data transmission from the logger cannot be established.
- The logger is operating on Software Version 5.2.
- The BaseStation is operating on Software Version 8.0.
Cause
As part of normal product lifecycle management, SCADAR introduced Hardware Version 2 (HW2) Bluetooth communication hardware.
A known compatibility limitation exists between:
Device | Version |
BaseStation | HW2 / SW 8.0 |
Logger | HW1 / SW 5.2 |
In this configuration, communication between the BaseStation and Logger cannot be established.
As a result, the logger cannot receive the software update required to migrate to Software Version 6.0 through the standard cloud update path.
Compatibility Reference
The following compatibility scenario is affected:
BaseStation: HW2 / SW8.0
Logger: HW1 / SW5.2
This combination cannot communicate.
How to Identify Affected Devices
If you are unsure whether a logger is HW1 or HW2, the hardware generation can be determined from the product serial number.
Hardware generation can be determined from product serial numbers.
The following serial numbers represent the first HW2 device manufactured for each product family:
CMC SCADAR Part Number | Product Serial Number |
Y11SCAD02 - SCADAR BaseStation | SN00000507 |
Y11SCAD14 - Current & Volts Logger (800 A) CS.800.A | SN00001841 |
Y11SCAD15 - Pressure Logger (16 bar) PS.16.Bar | SN00000986 |
Y11SCAD16 - Temperature Logger TS.200.CEL | SN00000052 |
Y11SCAD17 - Flow Logger FS.220.mm | SN00000118 |
Y11SCAD18 - Dewpoint Logger DS.-80.CEL | SN00000057 |
Y11SCAD19 - 4-20mA Logger GP.4-20mA | SN00000101 |
Y13SCAD02 - Pressure Logger (60 bar) PS.60.Bar | SN00000059 |
Y15SCAD02 - Current & Volts Logger (50 A) CS.50.A | SN00000090 |
How to interpret the serial number
As a rule:
- Serial number below the transition point = HW1
- Serial number at or above the transition point = HW2
Resolution
The affected logger must first be upgraded using a compatible HW1 BaseStation.
Upgrade Process
1. Confirm the logger is:
- HW1
- Software Version 5.2
2. Confirm the site BaseStation is:
- HW2
- Software Version 8.0
3. Obtain access to a compatible HW1 BaseStation.
4. Update the compatible HW1 BaseStation to SW8.0. This will update the logger software on that BaseStation to Version 6.0 or later.
5. Connect the affected logger to the HW1 BaseStation.
6. Allow the logger software to be upgraded to Version 6.0 or later.
7. Return the logger to service on the HW2 BaseStation.
8. Verify normal communication and operation.
Expected Result
Following a successful upgrade, the configuration should be:
- Logger HW1 SW6.0
- BaseStation HW2 SW8.0
Communication is restored and the logger can continue receiving updates through the normal cloud update process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't the logger be updated directly?
The logger must first communicate with the BaseStation in order to receive the update.
In the affected configuration, communication is not possible, preventing the update from being delivered.
Is this a hardware fault?
No. This is a known compatibility limitation affecting legacy HW1 loggers operating on Software Version 5.2 when used with HW2 BaseStations operating on Software Version 8.0.
Do all HW1 devices have this issue?
No. This issue only applies to loggers operating on Software Version 5.2. Once upgraded to Version 6.0 or later, normal communication is restored.
Is there an alternative update method?
No. The approved migration path requires temporary use of a compatible HW1 BaseStation.
Further Assistance
If you are unable to determine the hardware version of your equipment or require assistance performing the upgrade, please contact SCADAR Support and provide:
- BaseStation serial number
- Logger serial number
- BaseStation software version
- Logger software version
This will enable us to confirm whether the installation is affected and advise the appropriate upgrade path.
Recap
Here's a quick summary:
⚠️ HW2 BaseStation / SW8.0 + HW1 Logger / SW5.2 – These devices cannot communicate.
✅ Resolution – Connect the affected HW1 logger to a compatible HW1 BaseStation.
✅ Upgrade – Upgrade the logger to Software Version 6.0 or later.
✅ Return to service – Once upgraded, reconnect the logger to the HW2 / SW8.0 BaseStation.
✅ Result – Communication is restored and the logger can continue receiving updates through the normal cloud update process.
